The Six Intimacy Skills and Relationship Coaching

Certified Laura Doyle Relationship Coach badge

Learning a relationship concept and applying it during an emotional moment are very different experiences.

You may have read The Empowered Wife, listened to Laura Doyle’s podcast, or begun learning about The Six Intimacy Skills™. The ideas may make sense when you encounter them in a book or hear another woman’s story. Applying them in your own marriage can be more difficult.

When you are hurt, frustrated, or afraid of losing connection with your husband, familiar reactions can take over. You may know that you want to respond differently but remain uncertain about what that would look like in the situation in front of you.

Relationship coaching helps close the distance between understanding the skills and practicing them in everyday life.

What Are The Six Intimacy Skills™?

The Six Intimacy Skills™ are a relationship framework created by bestselling author Laura Doyle. They are intended to help women examine how they care for themselves, communicate their desires, receive from others, show respect, experience vulnerability, and respond to areas outside their control.

The skills direct attention toward the woman’s own choices rather than toward correcting or managing her husband.

This does not mean that every marriage problem is the wife’s fault. It means that each woman has the greatest influence over her own communication, behavior, emotional care, and decisions.

For many women, this creates a more practical place to begin. Instead of waiting for a husband to become interested in changing the relationship, a wife can start considering what she wants and how she would like to show up.

Why Reading About the Skills May Not Be Enough

A book can introduce a principle, provide examples, and help you recognize patterns. It cannot know the full context of a conversation that happened in your kitchen last night.

You may recognize the importance of respect but remain unsure whether a particular comment sounded disrespectful. You may want to express a desire without knowing how to separate it from an expectation. You may understand the value of self care while still feeling guilty whenever you make time for yourself.

It is also easy to interpret a skill in a way that was never intended. Relinquishing inappropriate control does not mean becoming passive. Respect does not mean agreeing with everything your husband says. Expressing vulnerability does not require sharing every emotion at every moment.

Relationship coaching provides a place to examine these distinctions. You can discuss what happened, what you hoped would happen, and what made the situation difficult. A coach can help you identify possibilities that may be hard to see when you are emotionally involved.

Applying the Skills to Your Own Marriage

Every marriage has its own history, personalities, pressures, and recurring patterns. The same skill may look different from one relationship to another.

During coaching, you can bring forward the situations that are affecting you now. This might include:

• A conversation that repeatedly becomes an argument
• A request that your husband seems to ignore
• Resentment about responsibilities at home
• Feeling dismissed, lonely, or unappreciated
• Difficulty receiving help or affection
• The urge to correct, remind, or manage your husband
• Uncertainty about how to communicate what you want
• Trouble making your own well being a priority

The purpose is not to identify a perfect phrase that will control the outcome. Coaching helps you become more aware of your choices and consider how a skill might be practiced in a way that feels genuine to you.

You can then try a different approach, notice what happens, and return to coaching with what you learned.

A Laura Doyle Certified Relationship Coach receives specialized training in The Six Intimacy Skills™ and the Laura Doyle coaching method.

Certification requires coaches to demonstrate knowledge of the skills and their ability to guide women through conversations without simply telling them what to do. The philosophy behind the coaching recognizes that the client is the expert on her own life.

Angela Manion uses questions, listening, personal experience, and coaching tools to help clients discover choices for themselves. She does not make decisions for her clients or prescribe one answer for every relationship.

Her role is to help you slow down, recognize possible blind spots, and explore how the skills may relate to your circumstances. You remain responsible for deciding what feels appropriate for your life and marriage.

Learning Without Judgment

Practicing a new relationship skill can feel uncomfortable, especially when your familiar response happens automatically.

You may recognize a pattern only after a conversation has ended. You may understand what you wanted to do but respond differently in the moment. You may experience progress in one area and continue struggling in another.

Coaching provides a place to discuss those experiences without being criticized for getting something wrong.

Angela helps clients look at what happened with curiosity. A difficult interaction can become useful information rather than proof that you have failed. You can identify what triggered your response, what you were hoping to receive, and what you might choose to practice next time.

Developing relationship skills is a process. Consistent support can help the ideas become more natural in your daily life.

Your Husband Does Not Need to Learn the Skills

The Six Intimacy Skills™ are taught to women. Your husband does not need to read Laura Doyle’s books, attend coaching, or practice the same framework.

This is one reason women often explore Laura Doyle relationship coaching when their husbands will not attend marriage counseling. The wife can begin receiving support without requiring her husband to agree that the relationship needs help.

Coaching focuses on the part of the relationship that belongs to you. You can examine how you communicate, where you may be overextending yourself, and how you respond when you feel disappointed or disconnected.

You cannot control how your husband will respond. You can become more intentional about the choices you make and the kind of relationship you want to help create.

Angela’s Experience With The Six Intimacy Skills™

Angela first discovered The Six Intimacy Skills™ while experiencing tension in her own marriage.

She had earned a Master’s in Community Counseling and previously worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Despite that background, Angela found that professional knowledge had not resolved the frustration she was experiencing at home.

As she practiced the skills, her approach to the relationship began to change. She experienced more peace, playfulness, and connection in her marriage. That personal transformation inspired her to become a Certified Laura Doyle Relationship Coach.

Angela now combines her coaching training, previous professional experience, Christian faith, and understanding of what it feels like to struggle in your own marriage.

She is based in Mechanicsville, Virginia, and provides online relationship coaching to women in Richmond, throughout Virginia, and in other locations.
